This is my second post in a series highlighting articles and interviews covering technology, animation or culture and featuring Pixar. To start, Steve Muench tweeted a link to a YouTube video with Pixar's Tony DeRose on how the studio uses math in the simulation of cloth and hair. You may remember this Numberphile interview with DeRose from last November; this new video contains extra material not used in that original video.
Second, Diego Rojas tweeted a link to a great Harvard Board Review article on the importance of organizing for innovation, and highlighting how successful Pixar has been in creating and maintaining their innovative culture.
Next is an article on how Oculus is using virtual reality in an innovative, new way to tell films. Lost is the first short film from Oculus Story Studio, where ex-Pixarian Saschka Unseld is now Lead Creative Director. You'll remember Unseld as the director of Pixar's short film The Blue Umbrella. We've seen some very cool, new ways to tell films from ex-Pixarians, including Lost and Windy Day by Jan Pinkava, director of Geri's Game and co-director of Ratatouille.
Finally, let's finish with an interview The Chronicle did with composer Michael Giacchino. While Giacchino doesn't discuss any of his Pixar scores (The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up, Cars 2, and short films One Man Band, Lifted, La Luna and Toy Story of Terror), the article contains a couple of images of Michael with awards he won for the score to Up. I originally found this article due to a tweet from Michael's sister Maria. And speaking of Giacchino and Pixar, just last week Michael posted a couple of photos from one of his Inside Out scoring sessions with Pete Docter. Can June just hurry up and get here so we can finally see this movie?!

Monsters University Home Video
It took a couple extra days but it finally arrived! Yes, I'm talking about the Monsters University Home Video! I pre-ordered mine from the Disney Store and thought it would arrive on the 29th, but it didn't show up until late Halloween afternoon. But I think it was worth the wait! I purchased the 3-disc combo pack (Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy). Since I pre-ordered it, I also received a set of 4 beautiful 10" x 14" lithographs, each showing a different scene from the movie.
I haven't had a chance to watch the movie or look at any of the features yet but did download the digital copy. I'm very happy to say the download process was simple. I've downloaded a number of films from Flickster and Ultraviolet, and absolutely hate that process. But downloading Monsters University was a pleasant surprise. I am a Disney Movies Reward member, so I logged in there to record my points for purchasing the film. Once I did that I was given a link to download the film to iTunes. I clicked on that, which launched iTunes and began the download immediately.
As an extra surprise, in addition to the digital copy of the film I received the iTunes bonus content which I wasn't expecting. This includes a look at the music for Monsters University and The Blue Umbrella (the beautiful short by Saschka Unseld that proceeded Monsters University), plus features like Campus Life, Monthropology, Story School, Scare Games, Welcome to MU, Scare Tactics, Color and Light (can't wait to watch that one), Paths to Pixar (excited about this one too), deleted scenes and others. It even includes the Easter Egg I found out about reading The Pixar Post's review of the Blu-ray (The Easter Egg features Adrian Molina discussing the opening title sequence for the film with samples of his storyboards - so cool). I can't wait to start digging into all of these features, plus those on the Blu-ray bonus disc! It's going to be a fun weekend!

Monsters University Blogger Press Event
A lucky group of about 2 dozen bloggers will be converging on Emeryville next week for the Monsters University Bloggers Press Event!
The event begins Monday the 8th with a reception at the Pixar studio, where the bloggers will get to view footage of Monsters University and see the short film The Blue Umbrella. Things really take off on the 9th with a day full of classes, including:
Finally, on Wednesday, the group will spend the day touring the Walt Disney Family Museum. It sounds like an awesome experience!
Here is the list of bloggers I know of that will be attending the event. I'm missing a few, and if you notice only 1 Pixar blogger (@ThePixarTimes) has stated they are attending. I'm guessing there will be a few more announced over the next couple of days, and I will update this list once that happens.
As a side note, almost exactly 1 year ago I published my first blog post. The topic? The Brave Blogger Press Event! Wow, time has sped by! In that first year, I published about 60 posts (not including a couple dozen more that I started but haven't finished!!) and have met some amazing people! For those of you who read these posts, or follow and chat with me on Twitter, I am very grateful! I realize posts have been few and far between the last few months. But I think things will be getting back to order and you'll be seeing posts from me on a more regular (i.e. frequent) basis.
